Good Data Infrastructure Accelerates Insights

Access to high-quality information is part of innovation’s core infrastructure. We need to know what the problem is and understand how our innovations change the current state for the better. We need to empower intrapreneurs, and our academic and industry partners, with meaningful information. This year, Care & Transformational Initiatives collaborated with multiple partners to launch efforts to use data paired with artificial intelligence (AI) to solve real-world problems.

Synthetic Data to Serve Veterans

Understanding the factors that put Veterans at an increased risk for chronic diseases and illnesses is critical to protecting and treating the more than 22 million US Veterans alive today. To better understand the factors that impact Veteran health, the Veterans Health Administration Innovation Ecosystem (VHA IE)’s Care and Transformational Initiatives (CTI) portfolio is using artificial data – also known as synthetic data – to measure health risks that will improve Veteran care.

To do this, CTI is developing a platform that compiles patient-oriented data, facilitates analysis, and creates realistic, synthetic clinical datasets.

Overall, the platform provides on-demand access to insights and a means to protect patient privacy. The initial proof of concept platform will focus on suicide prevention, chronic disease management, precision medicine, health equity, and COVID-19.

Machine Learning in Response to COVID-19

Augmented Reality and 5G

On June 2, 2020, the VHA Innovation Ecosystem and precisionFDA launched COVID-19 Risk Factor Modeling Challenge. The challenge provided participants with a set of 147,451 synthetic Veteran health records. The challenge tasked participants with developing machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) models to help health care systems predict COVID-19 health outcomes in five key areas. The challenge’s results will be used to help health care systems better triage and treat Veterans.

Collaborations Empower Use of AI for COVID-19

Leaders from VA helped to form a Brain Trust to define core challenges and recruit expert mentors to challenge the global community to develop innovative solutions that utilize AI to address COVID-19. The XPRIZE competition recently announced its three finalists for the AI for Good Global Summit: Collective Pandemic Intelligence Track for the Summit held virtually September 22–30, 2020.
